Collet reducer sleeves let you run a small shank cutter in a larger collet without buying a full collet set. Slip the sleeve into your existing collet, insert the bit and tighten as normal. They are the practical answer for trim routers with a fixed 6.35mm (1/4") collet, and for ER collets when you only occasionally need a 3.175mm (1/8") or 4mm shank.
A collet reducer allows for use of smaller shank bits to fit your spindle collet. Available in range of sizes to fit 6.35mm, 6mm, 4mm and 3.175mm. For optimal results, use the appropriate collet for your bit's shank.
A reducer adds one more interface between spindle and tool, so expect slightly more runout than a dedicated collet. For regular production work in one shank size, a proper precision ER collet is the better option; keep the reducer for occasional jobs and odd sizes.
