EVA Foam Decking Bit V Bit

An EVA foam decking V bit is a two-flute V-groove tool made for cutting and engraving EVA foam decking on a CNC. It’s the bit behind the “faux teak” marine deck look — a sharp V-point that slices clean, consistent grooves into the foam to create the plank and caulk lines. On the dual-colour decking sheets that are cut on the top skin to a contrasting base layer, the V-groove cuts through the top colour to reveal the layer beneath, giving you that crisp caulk-line effect in a single pass.

Foam demands a genuinely sharp edge, and the twin cutting edges here keep the groove smooth and even. The two flutes share the work for a cleaner shoulder line and a finer finish along the groove walls, slicing through EVA rather than dragging or tearing it. Because it’s a V, the groove width is set by how deep you cut — deeper equals wider — so with a little depth control you can dial the caulk line to exactly the width you want, and keep it perfectly even across a whole sheet.

Suitable for

• EVA foam decking / faux-teak marine decking sheets (single and dual-colour)
• Boat, kayak, SUP and jetski traction pads and deck mats
• EVA gym, play, craft and packaging foam — grooving, engraving and bevelling

Not ideal for

• Hard materials — timber, plastics and metals; this bit is ground for soft foam and will dull quickly in anything harder
• Deep grooving — a V-profile widens as it goes deeper, so it’s made for shallow decorative lines, not deep slots
• Flat-bottomed grooves or pockets — use a straight or engraving bit where you need a square base rather than a V

Adam’s Tips

Sharpness is everything with EVA. Keen edges slice the foam cleanly, while a dull bit drags and leaves a fuzzy, torn edge. Keep the flutes clean too — EVA residue builds up and blunts the cut, so a quick wipe with solvent between sheets keeps it slicing sharp.

On dual-colour decking, dial in your groove depth on a scrap offcut before you run the sheet. Because a V-bit gets wider as it cuts deeper, even a small depth change noticeably changes the caulk-line width — so set your Z depth to just break cleanly into the base layer and confirm the line looks even before committing to the full job.

Foam is light and moves easily, so use solid work holding — fresh masking tape with spray adhesive, or a vacuum bed — to stop the sheet lifting or shifting mid-cut. You can usually cut the grooves in a single pass; keep the feed brisk and the RPM moderate so the bit slices rather than smears, as EVA can melt and gum if the tool dwells or overheats.
