A torch height controller needs to read the plasma arc voltage, but the raw arc voltage (100V to 200V or more) is too high and too noisy to feed straight into control electronics. A voltage divider sits inside or on the plasma cutter, scales the arc voltage down by 20:1 or 50:1 and filters the high frequency interference, giving the THC a clean, safe signal to work from.
